Bought new MI license plate - when does old one expire?

Last week I went and bought a personalized license plate for my husband, for a gift. SOS is sending the new one in the mail along with new stickers, etc. My question is this - what happens if I don't give it to him right away? Is the old one expired? Do I need to give it to him immediately?
