How do I deal with someone who's being a d-bag?

I don't understand why you insist on working there without pay and go through hell with this man. I mean, what kind of benefit do you get from all this? I'm sure your boss will give a good reference for you even if you leave now. Why are you sacrificing so much to help your boss get his lab up and running? What's in it for you? I'm just puzzled why you put yourself through all this, I suppose. If I were you, I'd not deal with this guy at all, and just pack up my stuff and go.
