Is my boss allowed to reveal confidential information?

I work at a restaurant in California, and the other day I called out with a "family emergency" My general manager became infuriated and proceeded to complain to the hostess' about my absence and revealed to them the reason that I had called in. Something along the lines of "what kind of family emergency could keep him, etc" Is he allowed by law to do this, or is it just him being unprofessional?
